What Is Medium Grain Graphite ?

Medium grain graphite refers to synthetic graphite with a particle size typically between fine grain (<0.8 mm) and coarse grain (>2 mm). Compared with fine grain graphite, it has lower machining precision but better cost efficiency and higher thermal conductivity. Compared with coarse grain graphite, it provides finer structure, higher strength, and improved surface finish. This balance makes medium grain grades widely used in EDM electrodes, foundry molds, furnace fixtures, and glass industry tools. In essence, medium grain graphite offers an optimal compromise between machinability, durability, and cost, fitting applications that demand both strength and economy.

Key Features & Benefits

  • High temperature resistance: Retains strength and integrity at extreme operating conditions.
  • Thermal shock resistance: Maintains dimensional stability under rapid heating and cooling cycles
  • Corrosion resistance: Resists chemical attack in harsh atmospheres, extending service life.
  • Superior thermal conductivity: Promotes uniform heat distribution in furnaces, molds, and EDM setups.
  • Machinability: Enables precise shaping into electrodes, plates, or rods without edge cracking.

These advantages make our material one of the leading performers in its category, balancing durability, process efficiency, and cost control.

Cylindrical vs. Block Medium-Grained Graphite

When choosing medium-grained graphite, the shape matters just as much as the grade. Cylindrical graphite rounds are a cost-effective option, commonly used for standard parts like electrodes, rods, and tubes, making them well-suited for continuous operation. Rectangular graphite blocks, on the other hand, offer larger sizes, higher density, and excellent flexibility for machining, which makes them ideal for molds, crucibles, trays, and heavy-duty components where strength and thermal shock resistance are critical. Unlike suppliers that only offer extruded rounds, SHJ Carbon provides both extruded rounds and vibration-molded blocks, giving customers the freedom to select the most suitable material for their applica
